Affirming Care for Neurodivergent New Yorkers
Research around neurocomplexity has exploded in the past decade. While this has brought greater visibility, greater access to care, and deeper understanding, it can also invite some confusion around what resources are helpful versus clickbait. I have strived to stay up-to-date on the latest findings around efficacy of different types of treatment. This also means listening to neurocomplex clients and parents about their lived experiences. While I do my due diligence in seeking out resources, I also highly value the voices of my clients and the professionals with whom I work.
I specialize in working with ADHD, Autism, OCD, and PDA neurotypes, all of which call for different treatment approaches. Across the board, I value a “bottom-up” processing approach. Meaning more experiential and polyvagal-informed approaches are favored over cognitive ones. I do, however, blend more cognitive approaches, like ERP and ACT, where appropriate and in service of advancing treatment goals. Psychoeducation, too, has helped clients frame their experiences in ways that help them and their parents gain a greater understanding of how their brain works, which can lead to stronger self-advocacy skills as well as self-compassion.
Elevating self esteem and capacity for self compassion can be powerful tools in healing and an inner compass that steers towards health.
What to Expect
I have developed a flexible framework to working with each neurotype, which is then tailored to the individual.
Individual therapy
Working on an individual, weekly basis, we will identify goals and work towards them together. Being neurodivergent can mean living with complex trauma and processing these experiences can be crucial in getting to the “music beneath the lyrics”.
Support Systems
Life doesn’t happen in a vacuum or solely in the therapy space. We are social beings. Identifying support systems is an important part of effective treatment and exploring who and what spaces feel safe and affirming is an integral part of healing.
